With Broadband internet available worldwide, the people from different countries are connected to each other. This has lowered the cost of connecting and is creating a storm for Internet of Things. Internet of Things (IoT) is a technology of connecting things of everyday use like mobile phones, coffee makers, headphones, cars, and other things. IoT can be understood as a means of connecting people to people, things to people, and things to things.
On a broader platform, IoT is the future of smart cities and governments around the world have started looking how IoT can bring a significant change to our lifestyle, to the place we live in, and much more. In the coming years, there will be many job opportunities in this field, and it has been estimated that by 2020, around 4.5 million developers will be required to solve the challenges in IoT.
Studies have shown that IoT can increase productivity and efficiency. One of the examples of IoT connecting things is cited by Soren Hansen, a senior chief consultant at Ramboll. He is in favor of embedding sensors in the tarmac of the car parks so that nearby drivers can be notified of the empty places. This would not only save time but will also reduce fuel consumption. The good news is that the cost of IoT is nothing as compared to the cost of the entire infrastructure.
Talking about e-commerce businesses, when many electronic devices will be connected to each other, it will be easy for the consumers to make quick decisions and order things instantly. One example is that you see that you see that you have no vegetable in your fridge and imagine that you can order the items right from the panel of your refrigerator. This will be an exciting example of IoT and will make our easier as well as connected.
IoT is going to make a significant presence in predicting machines breakdowns before they happen. At present, businesses work on preventive maintenance but IoT will bring predictive maintenance to reality. This will help to prevent the breakdowns. Companies like IBM are its pioneers. Moreover, for online retail companies, IoT will enhance automated order processing and will help the customers to get their products on a fast pace.
Some cities have recognized the importance of IoT and are working on it. In various cities of US, chief information officers have been appointed to make sure that the technology developed is taking place. This is going to increase the pace of development in cities all over the world, setting new technology standards for the society.
