Dear Emotions

Please let me sit with him for some more time. It’s just been two hours and you are taking him away. How can you decide the time without asking us? Give us some more time to be together. I want to see him, touch him and hold him”, said Swati as they were taking her father to the cremation ground.

Her family was falling apart. She had seen her brother crying his heart out for the first time; her mother was not in her senses, cursing her fate. She stood there without a tear in her eye thinking about the next day, the future of her family and how she would take care of them and not let them fall prey to their emotions.

She needed to earn money to run the house, for her brother’s education and to give the best to her mother in everything. She resumed her job on the 5th day after this incident. She received her salary cheque and kept it in front of the picture of her father sobbing, “Whom will I give this now? You were the happiest when I joined this job.”

Don’t worry, start with less, learn and grow. You will get the best with experience and skills”, told her father when she objected to the salary offered to her at her first job. This was the best advice she had ever received in her life, and even today, when looks back, this is still the best and the only advice that keeps her going in her professional life.

Though she took more than a year to come out of this trauma while standing strong for society and her family, but at each step, she had missed his presence. That phase had actually made her weak, low in confidence, low in self-esteem and extremely vulnerable. She was searching for comfort in words, in friends, in family and at work, but the void could not be filled. Even today, when she is all settled in her life (it seems though), she carries a pang of guilt and sorrow that is now deeply buried in her consciousness.

There are times when she cries without a reason. She has learnt to handle the loss but yes, overcoming it is still difficult. She has learnt to balance her emotions.

With time, priorities changed and reasons for happiness multiplied. She had her family’s life coming back on track finally. Time has definitely proved that it can make you stronger enough to push yourself to keep going and doing!

“The emotions suppressed are always true,
The emotions suppressed hold value,
The emotions suppressed are close to me, them and you!”

As Adele Theron puts it, “The fear of what might happen stops people but the trauma process is so beautiful and transformational. There is nothing to fear in our emotions, they will not swallow you whole - they will speak to you in profound ways.”

  3. A heart-wrenching story of love and loss. We can't deny the fact that loss is an integral part of life and we need to accept it, though the process is very difficult to cope with the pain. Again, where there is pain there is certainly a way to heal that pain. Loved reading the story but it left me very sad. Hope I can uplift my mood soon. - Swarnali Nath
