5 Unexplored Destinations in North East
North Eastern beauty attracts
tourists from all over the world with its nature’s mystical quality. The seven
sister states, i.e. India’s Northeastern States offer a picturesque view of the
lush green forests, majestic mountains and spectacular waterfalls. There are
some of the destinations in North East that are still unexplored, and some of
them include:
Majuli
The largest river island in the
world, Majuli is located in Assam and is surrounded by Brahmaputra River. With
a population of 1.5 lakhs spread over more than a hundred villages, the island
has people from Mising, Deori and Sonowal Kacharis Tribes. This inhabited
island has plantations of rice paddies a wide variety of flora and fauna.
Culture- Known as the cultural capital of Assam, Majuli is the
land of Vaishnavite monasteries. Famous for its 22 ancient Satras, it features
Assam Neo Vaishnavite culture. Their tradition is visible in the festivals such
as Raas Dance during Janamashtami Mahotsav. A carnival is organized during the
Majuli Festival in which performers from different regions of Assam come there.
Places to visit: Visit Kamalabari Satra, the religious heart
of the island and houses the things related to art, music and literature. You
can get a quick review of Assamese history in the Satra. Other places to visit comprise
of Garmur- the religious center of the Vaishnavite Tradition, and Tengapania
that represents the Ahom architecture.
Food- The famous food served on the island includes Assamese,
seafood, and some cuisines from different states.
Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary
Located about 31 km from Sikkim’s
capital, Gangtok, Kyongnosla Alpine Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary. Rich in
flora and fauna, the sanctuary has rare and endangered red panda and ground
orchids. It has natural vegetation of Silver Fir, Alpine flowers, tall Juniper
and more. Along with this, it also houses many medicinal plants such as Kutki
and Jatamasi among many others. It is also a perfect place for trekking as it
is located at an altitude of approximately 4000m.
Mon
Nestled in Nagaland, Mon is known
as the Home of Konyaks Nagas. The district offers pleasant views of the
foothills and attracts many tourists due to its distinct culture. Known for
their tattooed faces, headhunting prowess and blackened teeth, Konyaks call
themselves ‘Wang’, meaning ‘the beginning of everything’.
Culture- The local people of the district speak Nagamese and have
adopted Christianity. Konyaks are governed by Angh’s House that is the largest
in the district. One can find wooden carvings, head brushes, necklaces and many
other hand-crafted things.
Places to visit- On your trip to Mon, you can visit some of the top
attractions for tourists. Enjoy a clear and stunning view of Brahmputra River
from Veda Peak, the highest peak in the district. Another interesting place is Longwa
Village. The one half of its powerful Angh’s house lies in India and the other
lies in Myanmar.
Food- The famous food here is Momos and Noodles that will give you
the local flavor. Along with this, you can also savor smoked pork stew, bamboo
steamed fish and chicken rice soup.
Tawang
Bordered by Tibet in the North
and Bhutan in the South-west, Tawang is situated in Arunachal Pradesh features
a climate of low temperature. Located at an altitude of 3048 meters above the
sea level, it presents breathtaking natural beauty. Tawang chu River and Tawang
Valley are highly mesmerizing. Every winter, it experiences the snowfall that
makes it a popular tourist attraction.
Culture- Monpa Tribe and the activities in the district have given
a culture and tradition to the native people. The common occupation of the
people is the trade of cattle. Their festivals and traditions are related to
their religious and agricultural aspects.
Places to visit- Tawang has a long list of places that are on the
top when it comes to attracting tourists. Sela Pass is one of them and is
famous as the only high-altitude mountain pass in the world. Another is Tawang Monastery
where you can get the real essence of Buddhist Culture.
Food- The cuisine served here can only be described as
mouth-watering. In Tawang, there is a vibrant street food culture. Must-try
foods of the region include Paratha-Sabzi, Gyapa Khazi, and Thupka.
Haflong
Haflong is a hill station and a
town located in the state of Assam. With a population of around fifty thousand,
the town houses people from different tribes and races such as Nagas, Hmars,
Mizos, Karbis, and Dimasas. It offers beautiful views of azure hills, unique
orchids and flowers. It features a pleasant weather throughout the year.
Culture- Home to various tribes and races, Haflong enjoys different
festivals and rituals. The main festival here is Bushu. Their mode of economy is
agriculture and interestingly, their all festivals are agrarian based.
Places to visit- With the breathtaking views, Haflong Lake welcomes
thousands of tourists every year. It is one of the natural water bodies and
offers activities like boating and Jatinga village. You can also visit Maibong
that encompasses the ruins of Dimasa Kachari Kingdom.
